Allegan County Sheriff's Residence and Jail (Historical Museum)

Allegan County Sheriff's Residence and Jail (Historical Museum)
(1906)

113 Walnut

In 1906 Allegan County built this stylish Queen Anne style building to serve as the sheriff's residence and county jail. The cell blocks are attached to the rear of the building. The 1906 building was the county's third jail, and it in turn was replaced by a new jail in 1962. The Allegan County Historical Society, founded in 1952, found a home in the former sheriff's residence and jail. The building now houses a variety of exhibits on Allegan County history. Some of the cell blocks contain exhibits while others are left to depict jail conditions in the early 1900s.
